The Smart Solarium – unique worldwide
April saw the presentation of the FIBO INNOVATION & TREND Award 2020. A total of six FIBO exhibitors received the jury award for their extraordinary and progressive products and ideas. In 2020 the winner in the category Lifestyle, Life Balance and Wellness is the “Ergoline Sonnenengel Spectra” – the only solarium worldwide with a built-in skin sensor.
The international expert jury of the FIBO INNOVATION & TREND Award 2020 including Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse, University Professor for Prevention and Rehabilitation at the German Sports University, explains: “Over the past few years people have increasingly shifted their activities to the indoors in view of societal developments. This has reduced their exposure to sunlight and entailed health impacts, like vitamin D deficiency. By introducing the ‘Ergoline Sonnenengel Spectra’ the solarium segment in fitness clubs is taken to the next level and increasingly set into the context of health and prevention.” The winning product closes the gap between societal requirements and developments and biological needs.
The idea: Measure individual skin sensitivity and avoid sunburn
The Robert Koch Institute departs from the assumption that over one in two adult Germans suffer from insufficient vitamin D levels. The ‘Sonnenengel’ (Sun Angel) by Ergoline now enables them to produce vitamin D entirely naturally through controlled UVB light. Karsten Matuschka is Head of PR/Communication and Product Management at JK-INTERNATIONAL, the manufacturer and inventor of the innovative solarium. He explains: “Sunlight not only tans the skin but also does the body good and is of essential importance to our health. However, the right dose counts! The aim was therefore to develop a solarium that always emits precisely the right dose of UV light that the user tolerates well. The smart skin sensor in the ‘Sun Angel’ ensures that an excessive exposure is avoided. Every user receives the optimum UV dose to benefit from the bio-positive effects while avoiding the risk of sunburn.”
The implementation: Analyse, develop and certify
According to Karsten Matuschka, the biggest challenge encountered when developing the system used by the “Ergoline Sonnenengel”, was measuring people’s individual skin sensitivity in just a few seconds and inferring their appropriate UV dosage: “Since analysis of the skin involves a variety of parameters, extensive studies and tests were required and carried out with various research laboratories and physicians. Furthermore, it was important to make the measuring process self-explanatory and the measuring instrument so robust that it also always works safely and without maintenance in daily use. “The result is the world’s only solarium with integral skin sensor, which can calculate the personal UV sensitivity and adjust the solarium accordingly. The bio-positive effects of the Sun Angel were certified by the Medical Active health network as an innovative technology.
The details: From vitamin D programme to a “Styling Sunshine” tan
Alongside its individualised UV dosing the ‘Ergoline Sonnenengel’ boasts other innovations: “As a rule, there are various reasons for using solariums. Many customers wish to have an intense and immediately visible tan. For some users the producing of vitamin D is the focus – the tan should only be very light even with regular use. This is why the ‘Sonnenengel’ is the only solarium with four different intensity programmes and proven vitamin D production. In the ‘Vitamin D Mode’ the tanning UVA light sources remain switched off so that only a very discreet and natural tan is formed. Users wishing an immediately visible tan can select the ‘Styling Sunshine Mode’ where all UV sources are used for an intense tan. Vitamin D production is a proven effect in both modes. Furthermore, we have extended the spectrum of light emitted by the ‘Sonnenengel’ to include the UV-free Beauty Light. This red Beauty Light acts like skincare, thereby reducing the undesired side effects of tanning. Users with a particularly sensitive skin type can therefore even opt for a completely UV-free use of the ‘Sonnenengel’. For maximum safety in application the ‘Sonnenengel’ can be voice-controlled during solar radiation – which means the eyes can remain closed. To simplify operation even further, all comfort settings can be saved on an NFC card. On the user’s next visit the ‘Sonnenengel’ automatically adapts to this customer’s individual wishes,” explains Karsten Matuschka of JK-INTERNATIONAL.
The question of cost: Individual leasing options and personal after-sales support
Together with cooperation partners, JK-INTERNATIONAL offers leasing options for those wishing to obtain an ‘Ergoline Sonnenengel’. By expert accounts, the lease payments depend on the down payment, residual value and liquidity and are therefore calculated individually for each customer. Matuschka adds: “To ensure comprehensive consulting and training for customers, we exclusively cooperate with longstanding and experienced specialist retail partners – therefore you cannot buy our products at a webshop. Moreover, technical support that is provided quickly and competently in case of need, is especially important to us. We can ensure this with our own after-sales service team and a service network across all of Germany.”
The future: More than just a solarium
To Karsten Matuschka the ‘Ergoline Sonnenengel’ is the first step from classic solariums towards a holistic wellbeing treatment: “On top of a beautiful tan the “Ergoline Sonnenengel” produces bio-positive effects, proven vitamin D production and skincare thanks to the Beauty Light. This makes it more than “just” a solarium. To relax after a stressful day at work, as a reward after a tough fitness workout or to set the scene for the weekend this agreeable “short break” on the Sun Angel will in future gain in importance.” Matuschka also promises innovations in other product segments of JK-INTERNATIONAL that will bridge the gap between relaxation and health. Such as the exciting new developments for Wellsystem’s dry water massage.
