Even though FIBO 2020 could not go ahead in April as planned, six exhibitors were awarded with the FIBO INNOVATION & TREND Award 2020. In the Performance category, the EVO Rotating Dumbbells by the Eleiko Group were able to outdo their competitors and convince the jury. The dumbbells’ innovative, rotating-handle design is patent pending. In this series we present those behind the award winners – in this case the Eleiko developers of the EVO Rotating Dumbbells.
Training with dumbbells can be challenging – for users as well as their coaches. Eleiko’s innovative EVO Rotating Dumbbells are equipped with a rotating grip that allows users to lift them in a controlled and secure way. Their design creates a grip diameter that is significantly smaller than conventional dumbbells, making the EVO Rotating Dumbbell suitable for a wider range of users. In addition, the dumbbells convince users with their robust design. The FIBO INNOVATION & TREND AWARD 2020 jury is enthusiastic: “Their innovative rotation mechanism makes them the first to simulate barbell training, raising strength training with free weights to a whole new level. Using EVO Rotating Dumbbells makes it possible to boost motivation while stimulating improved results.”
The Idea: Design the world’s best dumbbell Björn Welde heads up the Product Development team at Eleiko Headquarters in Halmstad, Sweden. He explains: “For 60 years now Eleiko equipment has raised the bar and set new standards for weightlifting equipment. Since 1957 we have manufactured barbells recognised for their rotating sleeves, strong steel and unrivalled performance. Our barbell expertise certainly had a role to play in forming our dumbbell project. The design challenge was to make the world’s best dumbbell, both in terms of quality and dumbbell performance. EVO is the result.”
The Implementation: Two years of development to get the perfect result The development of the EVO Rotating Dumbbells took over two years and there have been many challenges on the way. Camilla Schough is Product Designer in Björn’s team and has been the lead engineer on the EVO project. Camilla points out: “We had a clear goal when starting the project, to develop the best dumbbell we’ve ever made, but the evaluation process took time, and had to, to get the results we were looking for. Everything – from finding the right blend of the polyurethane to combine the right measurements to getting the feeling we wanted when using the dumbbell – was carefully selected.” It was even a challenge to find the right materials: “As our heads are moulded and with weights up to 60 kg we faced the challenge of finding equipment that could produce heads of this size, while staying within our strict demands on weight tolerance. We ended up having to make our own proprietary blend of polyurethane that could handle the stress when dropped while still having a nice-to-the-touch surface and a premium look,” says Camilla.
The Details: A patent pending solution built to perform Durability, safety and performance are key factors for many owners and operators when making equipment decisions. According to Björn Welde, both quality and performance are Eleiko’s focus in development, also with the new EVO Rotating Dumbbells: “Regarding quality, we set out to make a ‘made-to-last’ dumbbell that that would be durable and exceed all performance expectations in busy, high-use facilities where dumbbells take a beating. In terms of performance we leaned on our expertise in barbell manufacturing and solved the rotational grip in the same way. One more innovative solution: Traditionally bearings or bushings are mounted under the grip in dumbbells making the grip either thicker than desired or the shaft weaker than needed. Our patent pending solution gives the best of both worlds, a strong shaft for durability with an ergonomic, well-performing grip diameter.”
The Costs: Available worldwide – individually as well as in setst EVO Dumbbells are available worldwide in a rotating as well as a fixed handle option. They are sold individually, but also in a wide range of sets in key ranges for simplified purchasing. Prices start from Euro 140, incl. VAT. The Future: Opening up strength training with free weights to new audiences When asked about the prospective of EVO, Surya Cox, Head of Marketing at Eleiko answers: “We are very excited about EVO Rotating Dumbbells and look forward to having even more users around the world training with them and experiencing their feel and performance.” For Eleiko it is clear: EVO has the potential to become a true classic. Surya concludes with the company’s vision of celebrating 100 years in sports in 2057: “It would be great to be able to exhibit a 40 year old EVO by then, heavily used but still functional, much like our #eleikovintage discs and bars.”
